Not Just “In-Between” Space: The Landscape That Makes a Place

At Cline, we believe outdoor spaces should do more than fill in the gaps. They should elevate the experience of a place. Highland North Hills gave us the opportunity to bring that philosophy to life in a way that feels both bold and intentional.
Completed in 2024, Highland North Hills is a 12-story residential tower located in Raleigh’s North Hills Innovation District. It’s a project that blends urban energy with moments of calm, and the landscape architecture plays a central role in that balance.
Our team designed a series of elevated outdoor spaces that serve multiple purposes. Residents can work, relax, socialize, or recharge, all without leaving the building. The courtyards include green lawns, fire pits, trellised workspaces, and quiet zones that feel tucked away but still connected. Every detail was considered to support how people actually live, not just how they move through a space.
This project reflects what we value most in landscape architecture: clarity in design, creativity in execution, and a deep understanding of how people interact with their environment. It’s not about following trends. It’s about creating spaces that feel natural, intuitive, and lasting.
Highland North Hills is a great example of how thoughtful land planning and landscape architecture can shape the identity of a place. It’s a space that invites people in and encourages them to stay, and that’s exactly the kind of impact we aim for at Cline.
